Castelling is an age old tradition that has its roots in the Catalonian region in Spain. The word castell is Catalonian for “castle”. It is built by the Castellers by arranging themselves in a pyramidal structure by climbing over one another’s shoulders and backs. Participated by people of all ages, the castells is perceived as a symbol of togetherness, mitigating all types of differences.
Members help each other in tying the Sash- a long cloth wrapped around the waist during one of their practices. Besides securing the core muscles of the body, the sash also helps the climbers to gain a foothold.
The single most important goal behind all the plannings and execution of Castell building maybe considered to assist the young enxaneta climb up to the top. It is only after the little child waves at the audience that the latter would break into an applause. In an activity that is mostly done by the adults, the importance given to a child is worth observing.
